The salty seaside township of Bluff is home to the Bluff Oyster Festival, a long-running and world famous in New Zealand event held every year.
Brought to you by a committee of passionate locals, the festival has a uniquely Southland flavour. People around New Zealand count down to the opening of the oyster season every winter: the finest restaurants the length of breadth of the country snap up as many of the oysters as they can, as quickly as they can. Oysters are synonymous with the deep south, the annual Bluff Oyster Festival is a day-long celebration of the local community and its favourite local cuisine.
Featuring stalls highlighting local favourites such as tītī (muttonbird, gathered every year by local Māori), seafood chowder, crayfish, paua, and venison as well as locally-brewed beer and New Zealand wine, entertainment ranging from live music to oyster shucking competitions – the rivalry is fierce! – and an eclectic mix of locals and visitors from throughout the country and beyond, the Bluff Oyster Festival is a sell-out every year.
