Where better to celebrate the blossoming of the new season than at the spectacular Maple Glen Gardens?
Spring has sprung! Just a short drive from the city, this 75-acre private garden, nursery, aviary, woodland and wetland is always a treat at this time of year. Lovingly, painstakingly crafted by owners Muriel and Bob Davison and their family, the gardens are the product of almost half a century of hard work and care. Whether you know your magnolia from your maple or not, this is the ultimate place to enjoy the best nature has to offer.
Spring highlights at Maple Glen Gardens include more bulbs than you can imagine, including those of the Narcissus ‘Dove Wings’ (a big feature in early spring), bluebells, and white cherry trees Prunus ‘Mt Fuji’ – always a spectacular sight in this season, as well as the moisture-loving irises, Iris sibirica, of which the Davisons grow four varieties, and the Higo irises that peak just before Christmas. All of the plantings are selected for the area’s prevailing conditions, and thoughtfully placed where they will have the opportunity to flourish.
Full of rambling pathways, delightful ponds, and tranquil gardens full of colourful and diverse flora and fauna, the gardens are a gem tucked away in the midst of rural Southland.
Maple Glen Gardens is truly a gardener’s delight and an inspiration for anybody with even a budding green thumb. Better yet, if inspiration strikes, the on-site nursery is well-stocked with plantings to bring some beauty to your own space.
The gardens are open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays, between 9am – 5pm. While there is still a chill in the air, that’s nothing an extra layer or two can’t fix. Enjoy a picnic lunch, lovely company, and one of the most tranquil gardens you’ll have the pleasure of experiencing.
