“Definitely the place to stay in Invercargill, highly recommend.” Ingrid, Auckland

Here for the Burt Munro Challenge?

Another legend is coming home. This year’s Burt Munro Challenge is your chance to see a brand new tribute to a Kiwi motorsport legend, before anybody else.

Burt Munro Challenge at Classic Motorcycle Mecca

If you’re heading to Invercargill, Classic Motorcycle Mecca is the place to be during the event in 2020.

Visitors during the Burt Munro Challenge will receive an exclusive first look at a new exhibit celebrating motorsport great George Begg. It will feature a collection of race vehicles built by Begg, as well as memorabilia from Begg’s competitive motorcycle racing career (including his AJS race bike) and more. Entry to the new George Begg display is included in admission to Classic Motorcycle Mecca. The 1600m2, custom-built exhibit space will blow you away.

Who was George Begg?

George Begg has been dubbed motorsport’s equivalent to Enzo Ferrari. He built 18 race vehicles that challenged, and beat, some of the biggest marques in the world during the 1960s and 1970s. In doing so, Begg cemented his place in motorsport folklore.

Begg also raced motorcycles in Britain and, famously, on the Isle of Man, before he returned home to open an engineering business in 1957. Demonstrating some of the attributes Kiwis pride themselves on – innovation, persistence, a ‘number eight wire’ mindset – Begg played a pivotal role in Kiwi motorsport’s golden age during this era. He even worked for the famed McLaren racing team. Not bad for a boy from Drummond.
